Tribute to an Intellectual Politician

Anil Madhav Dave

Anil Madhav Dave (1956-2017)

I pay my tribute to Shri Anil Madhav Dave ji, a social worker, RSS prachark, Environmentalist, especially river conservation activist, author, armature pilot, Rajya Sabha MP and Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change. It was my privilege to have occasional interactions with him. When I had my first meeting with him, an unexpectedly warm reception was given to us by standing with folded hands when I entered the residence of Mr. Anil Dave at his residential accommodation attached to the BJP Bhavan in Bhopal along with one of my friends Mr. Anil Pillai. We had an appointment with him for a brief meeting. I had two purposes to meet him. One was to invite him for the Sree Narayana Guru Jayanti celebration as Chief Guest and to inaugurate an approach road of Sree Narayana Mission campus in Bhopal. My second and more important purpose was to present him some books on Sree Narayana Guru and His works as well as to briefly discuss with him the Guru’s philosophy, its significance and relevance for society regardless to the classifications on the basis of religion, geographical boundaries, languages spoken, social and economic differences as these are all not stable or unchangeable.

I found him to be a very patient listener and an eager learner. He told me that he had occasions to understand about Sree Narayana Guru and expressed his desire to learn more about the Guru. What was there in my mind when I was going to invite a Political Leader as Chief Guest was totally transformed after the meeting. I realized that the meeting was with a scholar, an intellectual, soft-spoken, patient observer and a person not eager to display his haste unlike other politicians, but very punctual in his timings. He had kindly accepted our invitation and attended the programme very promptly. I still remember that it was a day with heavy rain, but he reached the venue in time and honored us with his presence throughout the programme. His speech in a reasonable voice filled with valuable content reflected that he had a good reading on Sree Narayana Guru and his concept of ONENESS. I also had the privilege to attend the function where his Book titled as “Beyond Copenhagen” was released. There are number of books in Hindi and English to his credit. In Hindi, some of his books are ‘Shivaji & Suraj’, ‘Narmada Samagra – Rafting Through Civilisation: A Travel Louge’, ‘Roti aur Kamal ki Kahani’. His English works included ‘Beyond Copenhagen’ and ‘Yes I Can, So Can We’.

During our discussions, he enquired about the Sree Narayana Organizations in MP and other states. On my briefing about the existence of large independent Sree Narayana Organisations in every city of the country, he suggested about setting up the Umbrella Organization for better coordination among them and the creation of a wider platform for rendering greater services to the society in line with the thoughts of the great Guru. He had appreciated me for having organized a Central Regional convention of Sree Narayana Organizations of undivided Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and encouraged me to do it on the national level. Thereafter with the grace of the great Guru, an umbrella organization named as Universal Confederation of Sree Narayana Guru Organisations (SNGC) with 68 member organizations in India and abroad is now working on a big platform with lakhs of member families throughout the Country and the said organization was originated from Bhopal itself.

It was the interactions with him that inspired me about going deep into the rich Indian spiritual background of the era of great Sages. It also echoed from him that the Teachings and Philosophy of Sree Narayana Guru was greatly influenced him in the creation of a better social network of people from all walks of life in India without giving space for discrimination among humans on any pretext. He used to be very vocal on the value-based services being rendered by the swayam sevaks in nation-building and the high heritage of India being upheld by them. I must wholeheartedly accept that it was my interactions with him inspired me to learn more about and gradually motivated towards it and the inherited political ideology.

Many people in Bhopal or Madhya Pradesh may not be knowing that he was the Chief of the Assembly Election Management Committee for BJP during the assembly election in 2003 with the responsibility of the planning, organizing, structuring and implementing the election work of Madhya Pradesh including surveying and suggesting winnable candidates to the top level party leadership and campaign programmes of various leaders, etc when Digvijay Singh was the Chief Minister with 10 years continuous tenure. The front face and star campaigner was Sushree Uma Bharati, but the person behind the election management was Anil Dave. Thus he was instrumental for the BJP to capture the power in MP after 10 years of continuous Congress ruling lead by Mr. Digvijay Singh.

Anil Dave flew a Cessna 173 over Narmada from its source to mouth for 18 hours to complete his travel of Narmada in air, the first person to do so. Not only this, Anil Dave is known for traveling across Narmada on a raft for 19 days. His rigidness towards the utmost utilization of food items without causing any wastage is also widely known.

After our programme, we had a fruitful relationship. During the period when he was Rajya Sabha MP, there were many occasions when we used to meet in Bhopal Airport and traveled together to Delhi and back. Whenever we were together, he used to talk to me at length. On learning that I am working with CIPET, he talked to me regarding plastics and its crisis. But after discussions in detail, his view was totally changed and he agreed that the very thin polyethylene bags alone creates confusion and started enquiring about the possibility of using plastics for river bank conservation. He was a statesman and a visionary.

A massive heart attack on Thursday, May 18, 2017, at New Delhi took Anil Madhav Dave for his heavenly abode. The Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had tweeted shock on his death and termed it as a “personal loss” to him. A simple person born in Badnagar in the Ujjain District of Madhya Pradesh, on 6th July 1956 had traveled through a long way from a normal social worker to a great personality and he will always be remembered among the highest echelon of Researcher on Indian Historical Backgrounds, writers, Environmentalists, River Conservation Activities, Social workers, Politicians of High Ethics, etc. etc.

Electoral Power

A very conducive political environment is now available in Kerala for the Sree Narayana Guru followers – mainly ezhava community- to unite and demonstrate their electoral power. Everybody will, in my opinion, agree that the ezhavas are widely scattered among the available political outfits without registering their united strength and therefore majority of them are used as political tools in the hands of minorities and the so called upper caste political pundits. The unity among ezhavas, other backward communities, scheduled castes and tribes, if emerged, would be a great bargaining power in the Kerala Politics. It is already late to realize that unless these communities stand united for the welfare and development of them, the different political exploiters will always keep them fighting each other on one or the other pretext to maintain their supremacy and gradually ruin them, forget their welfare and progress through these political masters. It is the time to realize that their very respectable existence and dignified generations ahead demands such a wise step at least now.

The most ideal step at this juncture is to take lead by the SNDP and form a new political party to provide platform to associate and work together by ezhavas, all like minded other backward communities, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and then associate with the NDA as an alliance partner. This would definitely be beneficial for the BJP to gain strength in Kerala along-with this new political party on one side and on the other side it would give a strong political platform for the young dynamic leaders belonging to these communities who are till now used and exploited by the LDF & UDF for their political gain.

Forming a political party and aligning with BJP as NDA partner is a very delicate step and has to be handled very sensibly as BJP will always try to twist the situation to line up SNDP behind it and take a lead of everything. If such situation emerges, it will be more suicidal for the ezhavas and other backward communities, as the so called savarna domination shall spoil the political ambitions of these communities more vigorously than the LDF and UDF. The ground reality is that BJP shall not be able to create a political wave in Kerala unless they get to align with the new political party being formed under the leadership of the SNDP. It is therefore, very much apt that they agree for fighting the Kerala general election under the popular SNDP leadership as an alliance partner of NDA. This would emotionally bring a lot of votes from the vote bank of right and left apart from the strategic votes. An appropriate election plan and work coupled with the shift of such emotional vote bank shall give a thumping majority to rule. Once it happens, the party formed shall be a powerful base for the generations to stay as a shareholder of power in Kerala.

Time is the essence of all wise decisions and the appropriate occasion enriches the success. The significance is of the time for punch. Let us look forward for the emergence of a great political reformation in Kerala by next general election.

a virtuous legacy for the young Guru followers

It is already too late to protect the people of backward communities and scheduled caste / scheduled tribes of Kerala which form the majority of hindus, from the exploitation of the two political front as they are being victimised on one hand by the highly organised minorities and on the other hand the cleverly created upper caste dominated leadership and muscle power driven left parties shedding crocodile tears on their poor plight.

Shri Vellapalli Natesan, the most popular & and beloved leader of SNDP is the most appropriate choice for projecting as C M candidate for the next general election in Kerala. First, a political party involving all hindu outfits, even if Perunna does not cooperate, should be formed and the same may be made as an alliance partner of National N D A. Then Vellapalli Natesan be declared as the consensus candidate for C M in Kerala. Cutting across any political affiliation, all those people believe in Sree Narayana Guru philosophy would silently vote for him. The support of other hindu factions & BJP will bring thumbing majority. The new political party so made shall be a National Party and would, by and large, emerge as a replacement to CPI(M) in some states.

This would be the befitting benefit, a dynamic leader like Vellapalli Natesan can give to the young generation, as it is golden opportunity to create an apt political platform for the young & upcoming Guru followers and other suppressed Hindu Communities to arrest their becoming political tools in the hands of present political outfits where they are merely exploited.

Political parties should realise the strength of Sree Narayana Guru philosophy for their sustainability

I strongly condemn the heinous act of portraying the crucifixion of Sree Narayana Guru in a tableau during a pageant held on Krishna Janmashtami by CPI(M) workers in Kerala, and covey my strong protest.

It is a known fact to every learned person in Kerala that the socio-religious reformation and economic reconstruction implemented with the efforts and guidance of the Great Guru initiated through the Aruvippuram Prathishta way back in 1888 that made a fertile ground for germination of communism in Kerala. This is also a truth that the believers and followers of the Guru are the core strength of Left Parties in Kerala.

Sree Narayana Guru was the Saint who stood and worked for universal brotherhood and a world society with out the discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, geographical or economical boundaries. It was He who worked for optimisation of spiritual and materialistic enrichment for a qualitative human life. Every ISM pauses short before the philosophy of the Guru.

Without realising the depth of Sree Narayana Guru philosophy and its present relevance, if Left Parties tend to work against the respect and faith towards The Great Saint and Social reformer Sree Narayana Guru under any political compulsion or threat, they should bear in mind that the followers of Guru having any political affiliation will neither support them nor forgive them.

I believe that it is the responsibility of each and every Sree Narayana Guru organisations working any where in the world should rise to the occasion and strongly condemn the heinous act of CPI(M) workers and protest it.
